Orvieto, located in Millinocket in the
Little Italy section of town is an Italian / American Market and Deli. The original founders of the business,
Dick & Tib Manzos Italian heritage goes back to a small village in central Italy called Orvieto, which is where
the name is derived.
Prior to the construction of the paper mill called Great Northern, {1899} Millinockets
population consisted of only about a handful of inhabitants. Once Great Northern Paper Company signed its contract with the
James B Mullen Company, labor was needed immediately to build the mill. Through Marco Lavonia Italian labor groups where hired
to meet the needs for masonry at the mill, track laying for the railroad, and later the installation of sewer pipes and water
and light systems for the town.
The Italian immigrants were eager to come and settled directly across from the mill
on the opposite side of Millinocket stream which gave birth to Millinockets Little Italy. New Italian houses
crowded close to each other in this small section of town as though to guard all that was truly Italian. Little Italy had
its own store that festooned with strings of sausages, garlands of onions, red peppers and garlic, with its multi-shaped
fat cheeses, its pastas and other commodities that were typically Italian. Tantalizing aromas of breads from its
basement bakery drew one and all. The store became the center of life for these homesick people.
Today, Orvieto,
founded in 1992, is committed to bringing you this unique Italian / American cuisine. Born from a small Italian village in
Italy to a small town in Maine, a family owned and run business. Come taste the quality that could only come from Italy or
our small town in Maine.
